On this website various vital elements of the human body portray a connection between mental stress in fiction and physical stress in vital organs. Throughout the three texts, objects are used that portray a normal situation but hide mental turmoil or push the interpretation to an ignored turmoil or situation. For example, in assignment one, nail-polish is used to portray the feelings and thoughts of the person using the nail polish, because that person cannot do this anymore. Instead of the focus on that person, the focal point is on their object, because they cannot tell their story anymore, because of depression. This persons depression makes them not partake in anything, and the rotten nail-polish is because of that the symbol for their lack of motivation caused by depression.
In the second assignment a recipe is used for the same purpose. With the idea of Tom Mantzaris, that fiction can be written from various different approaches, such as Valeria Luiselli does in her novel Lost Children Archive, with the practise of writing documentaries and testimonies. Fiction would be created through this process and can be seen out of the result, whilst simultaneously stretching the boundaries of fiction. Using the recipe as a forefront for my assignment, I approach fiction as a cookbook, with a clear format that deviates from fiction and recipe by beinga mixture here both formats conflict with each other in a way that the result is a new medium and in turn, a new kind of fiction – which again pushes the boundaries of fiction forward.
To continue on the fiction progress that exists through the writing of testimonies, the work Obit from Victoria Chang inspired the texts and especially the forms that conveyed many different concepts. Its free style showcases various ways a form and how specific forms can inspire and stretch out definitions of fiction. As the created archive does in Lost Children Archive, the archive of the last assignment shapes the characters behaviour and motivation to uncover the lost secrets, whilst the audience’s look into this is through a curated archive. With this created view, details could be omitted and the narrative shaped through time and loss of memory.
For further projects I would like to create a larger project with this kind of freedom, in order to create systems or detailed workings of other humans. And because of that, solely the limiting scope pushed back on my ideas, but served as a great constraint which made me ready to have results I was proud of for the interview evaluation.
I enjoyed the feedback from my peers but dreaded coming to that moment. I think it served as a stepping stone to calm down and be able to interact with any feedback over my work. Eventually it was fun to sit with each other and go on about each other’s approaches and why they wanted to write this, and because of it ended up feeling quite nice. Especially since I feel like my writing has improved, or that I have had freedom to explore exactly what I want to write about, which is thanks to the lack of limits and rules for the assignments.
